As the Solar eclipse of April 8, 2024 approaches, please remember the following.

Solar eclipses can be harmful to your eyes because looking directly at the sun, even for a short period during an eclipse, can cause serious damage to your eyesight. The sun emits extremely intense light, including harmful ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) radiation, which can damage the sensitive tissues of the eyes, including the retina.

Staring at the sun without adequate eye protection can result in a condition called solar retinopathy, where the cells in the retina become damaged, leading to permanent vision loss or even blindness. Symptoms of solar retinopathy may not appear immediately and can take hours or even days to become noticeable.

To safely view a solar eclipse, it's essential to use special solar viewing glasses or viewers that are specifically designed to block harmful UV, IR, and visible light. Regular sunglasses or homemade filters are not sufficient to protect your eyes during a solar eclipse. Additionally, indirect viewing methods, such as pinhole projectors or solar filters on telescopes or cameras, can also be used to observe the eclipse safely.
